Journal of Experimental Linguistics

The Journal of Experimental Linguistics (JEL) is published by the International Society of Experimental Linguistics (ExLing Society). In both name and philosophy, it is the first journal of its kind. The latter reflects the aims of the ExLing Society, as demonstrated by the International Conference of Experimental Linguistics (ExLing Conference) held since 2006.

The aims of JEL are multidimensional regarding the production of knowledge and the development of linguistic theory. The Journal will highlight the welcomed use of robust experimental methodologies as well as the advancement of linguistic applications — be they in language education, language pathology or language technology — in the context of state-of-the-art research avenues and current society requirements.   

In our approach, experimental linguistics is the indispensable link between linguistic theory and language applications. Experimental methodologies are set up in order to address specific questions and alternative hypotheses, which lead to empirical results which, in turn, enlighten linguistic theory or contribute to the verification of theoretical aspects and the creation of new ones. On the other hand, experimental methodologies and related results feed linguistic applications in their theoretical models and boost their performance of any application aspects. 

The JEL is expected to contribute to the broadening of linguistic studies in the main components of language, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse. Simultaneously, with the inclusion of interdisciplinary studies, such as cognitive linguistics, neurolinguistics and computational linguistics, a substantial increase in cross-component research is expected.

Our Journal will accept a variety of submissions, including research articles, tutorial articles, book reviews, and letters to the editor. Special issues will also be published, in accordance with proposals by the ExLing Conference participants and members of the ExLing Society. The Journal will guarantee fair and double-blind peer review and a fast publication process in its open access online system.

The JEL will be run by the editor and assistant editors, in collaboration with associate editors. Reviewers of the submitted publications will be chosen from among the ExLing Society members as well as international scholars with significant expertise and contribution to the area of each submission.
